A long-time internet friend (Hi, Kerri!) introduced me to Our Companions Animal Sanctuary in Ashford, CT, much earlier this year.
Immediately, the message resonated with me. From their mission: “Our Companions mission is to advocate for animals in need by engaging compassionate people to help provide innovative community programs. It is our promise to always do the right thing for animals and the people who love them.”
It is a sanctuary for animals with special needs.
Here’s what Kerri shared with me about OC and her involvement with the organization:
OC primarily serves communities in CT, but we have some clients that come from neighboring states (NY, MA, RI).
Our Companions Animal Rescue is a non-profit animal welfare organization committed to always do the right thing for animals. Renowned for its serene 47-acre Sanctuary Ashford, CT, Our Companions serves as a unique haven for the most vulnerable pets in our community.
Under the compassionate care of our staff and dedicated volunteers, the animals at the Sanctuary undergo specialized physical, behavioral, and emotional rehabilitation, enabling them to heal from past trauma and transition into new loving homes.
Additionally, through our efforts at the Valerie Friedman Program Center in Manchester, CT, Our Companions offers a range of rescue services and programs that positively impact the lives of pets and people statewide and beyond. This includes our Animal Helpline, which fields over 4,000 calls annually from individuals seeking assistance and support.
Sustained by the generosity of the public, all funding comes from charitable donations. It brings us great pride to have earned a perfect, Four-Star Rating (100%) from Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest independent evaluator of non-profit organizations.
Honestly, just look at these incredible programs and resources they offer to their community. It’s truly inspiring.
If you’re nearby, consider volunteering or adopting, and if you–like so many of us–are on a tight budget and donations aren’t in the cards for the year, the best way to help shelters and rescues for free is with awareness! Visit OC’s Instagram page and share their mission and adoptable animals to your network. You never know: What you post might spark a connection!

Holiday News from this corner of the internet:
Dear friends, if you’ve been around for a while, you know I usually publish several holiday-specific posts. I’m conflicted on holiday this year. So many people are struggling just to make ends meet that throwing hordes of gift guides feels tone deaf. This is particularly true as people are trying to be purposeful with their spending. Remember, we vote with our dollars. That said, I have one gift guide slated for this year featuring my favorite thing: books! I’m also going to share what I’m buying for the dogs and cats, but only on Instagram, not here. I’d prefer to give this site’s real estate over to what matters most in this season, and to me it’s the spirit of giving.
So, consider supporting Our Companions Animal Sanctuary today, then let’s connect on Insta or Substack for a more casual conversation.
